Scratches

A guy asked me to detail his white suburban the other day. I started on it yesterday. Today was polish and wax day. The paint has a tremendous amount of scratches in it. I started with a white pad and SSR 1.0. No luck. Went to SSR2.5 and an orange 5.5 in pad. Some of the scratches were removed, but it still looked bad. Switched to a 4 in orange pad and SSR 2.5. I got slightly better results. I finally went to a yellow pad and 2.5. I was able to get approx 70% removal. I am using a pc 7424 and made multiple passes with each pad combo. I tried every combo on the same section of the hood. I finally went over the rest of the vehicle with the yellow/2.5 combo. I know a pc has it's limitations, but most of the scratches could not be felt with a fingernail. Do I need to get SSR 3.0? And by the way I won't use a glaze unless all else fails. The guy is happy with the results, but I am not. Thanks for any suggestions.

I would have gone over the truck a few more times with the SSR2.5 and a cutting pad ... SSR3 and the PC can be tricky but it can be done... it would need to run at speed 6 and I'd also not use a cutting pad as it could cause more marring than repair.. If you use SSR3 with a PC, then try a polishing pad at speed 6 (after spreading) and work it until it has thoroughly broken down.
