I don't think it really matters. Some people say to go all in 1 direction so that marring won't be as visible. I think Steve mentioned to go this way. I go in circles as I find I get more thorough coverage and spread the product a little easier. Also, if you were to apply it via machine, it wouldn't be in straight lines.
Short answer-personal preferance with erring on the side of caution saying to go in straight back and forth lines. (IMO)

i did try a few swipes back and forth...doing it that way seemed to put it on and take it off in the same swipe almost..going in swirls it layered the product better.

Concerning the EX-P (which is a wonderful product due to its easiness of use), do several applications leave a noticeable result?

I prefer to go back and forth and others do circles... if the finish is perfectly clean it really doesn't matter, but if you are working outdoors and there is debris in the air and you pick it up accidentally and not notice, the working back and forth will minimize the damage that could occur, where circle would induce swirls or scratches...

2-3 coats does enhance the shine and protection ...after that we have not seen much more affect as for the shine or look :)
