What is the right MF towel for the job?

When I first started in detailing I purchased the Poorboy's starter MF towels kit. I love all but one of the towels in that particular package. Not because it is not a good towel. It was because I used the towel improperly. Which required me employing the SSR line to get rid of the marring that I instilled thru misuse.

I know what my favorite towels are but I do not know what the right towel is for each job. Anyone out there care to enlighten me and the rest of the people that may be new or not quite educated enough?

Which microfiber is a common question when you see me at a show and I have over 12 feet of microfiber spread out on tables....here's how i explain it...

Velvet smooth towels ...sizes 16 x 16 & 21 x 36
these towels are great for glass , final buffing , and the larger one can be used with QD's on a good finish. These towels have a very fine weave and leave no nap marks behind.

Work towel ..size 16 x 16
these towels car good for interior work, for working on wheels and are one of the few microfibers you can use for light polishing as they are tough towels with a low nap. They can be used for glass if you want too.

Super Thick and Plush towels ..size 16 x 16
these are for removing waxes/sealants and polishes ..they are soft yet strong and can take off thicker products with ease and then turn it over for buffing.

Mega-Plush and Deluxe Mega towels....sizes 16 x16 and 16 x27
these are all purpose towels they can remove waxes/sealants , polishes and also work well with QD's and waterless washes. Some people use them as wash towels too. They can also be used on glass and for buffing.

Waffle Weave towels...16 x 24 and 24 x 36 these are mainly for drying, I pefer to blot with them vs. wiping. They are very absorbant and some people use them with QD's as well as for cleaning glass.

Mega-Mitts...some say use these for washing, but only if there is not more than dust on a vehicle. I think these are primarily for interior work as they make wiping down a dash or seat a breeze. Spray a little dressing on the tips where your fingers are and you can get right next to the windshield without getting any dressing on the glass.

Microfiber applicators..are for applying wax/ sealants not polishes

For the most part microfiber should be used to remove products not apply. There are a few exceptions as dressing and LSP's (last step products) but they can not replace the bite of cotton when polishing by hand or a foam or wool pad when using machines.

A most erudite and definitve post. It answers most of my questions in regards to MF towels.

When I purchased the MF towel starter kit I used a very short nap almost shiny MF towel that I thought was the glass towel. It was a rather large towel. I really thought that this would be an ideal towel to use for a application when doing the final spruce up after washing.

What I encountered was a towel that did well on glass . I also found that thru my QD'ing techniques the towel was not right for me. I instilled marring at a horrendous scale. I put that towel back in the bag and did not use it again for at least a year. It must have been the pressure that I applied while using it. Have never encounter that scale of marring with any other towel.

My techniques have evolved since that beginning time, but I still have the fear of instilling marring with this towel. It has either set or been relegated to glass duties only. I will in the future try to re-incorporate this unused towel back in my regimem.

Thanks for such a quick response!!!

my pleasure..the large velvet smooth is one of my favorite towels..but as you said it is all about technique...I use it with QD' s like spray and Wipe and S&G but use no presure at all ...the weight of the towel itself can pick up dust and the QD with no effort at all. I also found it to work great with QW+ as the buffing towel, besides it's ability to clean glass spotless and streakless.

Which of these would be most comparable to ProForce towels sold at Sams Club? I only ask because I have a bunch of these and I want to get more plush towels. At the same time, I don't want to buy the same type of towel either.

All the towels listed are leaps and bounds higher in quality than any towel from Sams Club, Costco, BJ's, etc.

The two best towels IMO is the DMT's (with silk boarder) and the Mega Plush (without silk boarder)

These towels will last you wash after wash and years and years to come. You will never look back once you get your hands on some good quality micros

Poorboy / Pockets

I know you answered this question back in 2006, but I just wanted to check because a lot can happen in 8 years.

I am looking at purchasing more Microfiber towels and would like to get your opinion on getting the right one for the right job. I need polish and wax removal along with a final buffing towel. If you wouldn't mind I would also like to request the fabric blend and fabric weight of each.

Thanks

Thank you very much!!

Any chance I can get the fabric blend and fabric weight of each?
